An excellent writeup. There is no immediate solution to the recession problems in general. We can not control and demand that there should be increase in the available projects.

We are seeing realignment of the economy and we will go through restructuring for sometime. New ideas technologies and projects will replace the older ones. Take the case of new small size (10 inch or so) notebooks. They need small footprints and require an operating system similar to Android. That will require large number of Android experts. Freescale is likey to launch low cost i.MX515 processor which will use be used to design low cost sub $200 notebooks using Linux / Android. This will increase the demand for Android and Linux specialists. iPhone development is another area where the demand for experts has outstripped supply.

In hardware design the demand for persons with Signal Integrity expertise outstrips the demand.

Environment awareness is likely to create new opportunities in design of new energy efficient cars, methods and processes.

That being said, as an individual we will feel the pain for now. It will need a bit of hard work for now. This applies to business owners, worker, technologists. Let us hope for the best.

High school seniors who got acceptance letters from the University of California this year have plenty to be proud of: It was one of the toughest years to get into the state’s elite public colleges.

Figures released Tuesday show that across all campuses, UC accepted 72.5 percent of California high school applicants this year. That compares with 78.2 percent four years ago.

“This was an exceptionally competitive year for admission and probably represents one of the lowest admit rates in the last decade,” said Susan Wilbur,UC’s director of undergraduate admissions.

The economic crisis hit UC hopefuls with a one-two punch: State budget cuts prompted university officials to cut enrollment, but the number of applications was at an all-time high this year - fueled, perhaps, by students worried that they cannot afford pricey private schools.

Those factors combined to make some UC campuses much harder to get into than usual this year - Davis, Irvine, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz all faced freshman enrollment cuts.

UC Davis is planning for a freshman class of 4,600 students in the fall - down from 5,000 for the fall of 2008. The campus admitted 46.2 percent of applicants this year, compared with 67.8 percent who applied four years ago.

Becoming more selective is bittersweet for university officials.

“We are proud,”said Pamela Burnett,director of under graduate admissions at UCDavis.

“At the same time, it’s painful to turn away so many hard working, excellent students.”

The admission rate at UC Davis fell in the middle of a broad range across the campuses.

UCLA had the lowest admission rate, at 21.4 percent. UC Riverside had the highest, at 79.8 percent.

UC officials said that despite budget constraints and the record numbers of applications, they were still able to offer a spot to all students who met basic requirements: grades, college prep classes and standardized tests.

But that doesn’t mean students who meet the requirements got into the campuses they applied to. UC is sending out 10,000 letters this week offering spots at Merced or Riverside to eligible students rejected from all other campuses.

Across all UC campuses, the average student admitted had a grade-point average of 3.82 and scored 1,790 (out of 2,400 points possible) on the SAT.

Grades alone, however, aren’t enough to ensure a spot at super-selective campuses.

Jonathan Gilbert, a senior at Rio Americano High School, said he has a grade-point average of 4.2. He applied to five UC campuses and was accepted at all but one:UCBerkeley.

“I was really hoping I’d get into either Cal or UCLA, but with those schools you can never assume what’s going to happen because there are so many applicants,”he said.”My goal was to get into one or the other and I got into one, so I’m really happy about that.”

Gilbert spent Friday touring UCLA. He likes the academic, athletic and social opportunities provided by a big school in a big city. But he’s not sure he wants to sit in freshmen classes with hundreds of his peers.

Still, Gilbert said, “the campus is beautiful and I’m excited that it’s one of my options.”

Like all college applicants, he has until May 1 to decide where he will go next year.

That makes it tough to know right now how much the economic crisis will affect enrollment, said Wilbur, the UC official. Many students who in other years might aim for a private or out-of-state school could opt for a more affordable UC. Other families may find UC’s current $8,600-a-year tuition out of reach and choose California State University or a community college instead.

“This year is really unprecedented in many ways,” she said. “And we don’t know how students and families will react.”
